Diamond Cut Shapes

ROUND

The round brilliant cut diamond is the perfect representation of a marriage that will last a lifetime – as it is a symbol for infinity. Today, it is the most popular and most researched diamond shape on the market.

A round diamond will give you the most flexibility when it comes to balancing cut, colour and clarity while still getting the fire and brilliance you want. To maximize the brilliance of a traditional round, it is necessary to choose the highest cut grades, highest polish and highest symmetry.

PRINCESS

With its beautiful brilliance and unique cut, the princess cut diamond is a favourite for engagement bands. The princess has pointed corners and is traditionally square in shape.

When looking at colour grades for a princess cut, one must consider that even though the price of a J-colour non-round diamond is exceptional, the true colour of the diamond is still slightly visible on its corners. Moreover, Princess cut diamonds vary in how square or rectangular they are.

EMERALD

The emerald cut diamond offers a unique look, due to the step-cut on its pavilion and its large, open table. Instead of offering the sparkle of a round brilliant cut, the emerald cut produces a hall-of-mirrors effect with the interplay of light and dark planes.

The long lines and dramatic flashes of light give the emerald cut an elegant appeal. Due to the emerald cut’s large open table, the shape of this diamond highlights its clarity. Choosing the right emerald is important; when choosing one with a clarity grade of SI, one must review the clarity plot on the diamond certificate.

ASSCHER

The Asscher cut is a variation of the emerald cut and provides a unique, noble and elegant look to its wearer. Its art-deco styling combines old-world charm with modern cutting and faceting techniques to produce a stunning example of brilliance.

The shape of the Asscher has a pavilion that is cut with rectangular facets, similar to that of the Emerald cut. The Asscher cut also highlights the clarity of the diamond, so one must review the clarity plot on the diamond certificate.

Marquise

The Marquise cut diamond is a boat-shaped variation of the Round Brilliant. It is a unique cut, often chosen by women who wish to display individuality in their style. Its drawn-out form can create the illusion of longer, narrower fingers.

The marquise diamond has the largest crown surface, caret for caret, making it a great choice when trying to maximize the perceived size of a diamond.

OVAL

The Oval cut diamond has a striking brilliance that rivals that of the Round cut. It is an elliptical shape that gives a flattering illusion of length to the fingers and hand.

This cut is very popular among women with small hands, as well as those with fingers longer or shorter than average although it tends to especially highlight long and slender fingers.

RADIANT

The Radiant cut is a combination of two cuts, fusing a shape similar to that of a princess cut diamond with clipped off corners with the brilliance and fire of a Round cut. One could also compare its elegance and individuality to that of an Emerald cut.

PEAR

The Pear cut diamond is in the shape of a teardrop and is another variation of the Round brilliant. The uniqueness of the Pear cut makes it a popular choice for a variety of diamond jewelry. Should you choose it, the length of the cut creates a subtle slimming effect on the finger.

HEART

The Heart cut diamond is known as the most romantic and passionate of all the cuts. With a brilliance and fire that rivals that of the Round brilliant, this cut truly evokes the innocence and purity of love.

CUshion

This unique shape has been popular for more than a century. Cushion-cut diamonds – also known as “pillow-cut” diamonds – are available in shapes ranging from square to rectangular, and have rounded corners and larger facets to increase their brilliance, highlighting the diamond’s clarity.

If you choose an SI clarity grade, please be sure to review the clarity plot on the diamond certificate.

I decided to go with a custom designed engagement ring at Rodan Jewellers and I am beyond ecstatic about the outcome. They were able to bring my idea to life in such a smooth process. My fiancé and I had such a great experience with the team at Rodan. On our initial consultation we learned so much about their ring making process. The response time for any questions is fast and they are willing to help you with any special requests for your design. The amount of small detail and craftsmanship on the ring is spectacular! I couldn’t be more happy and would highly recommend this place if you would like a custom ring!
