Anatomy of a Watch

– the winder is called the crown.

– a screw-down crown means that the crown will be screwed tight after pushing it in which serves two purposes: 1. It protects the crown against breakage, and 2. Is an essential component of watches rated for swimming and diving. Watches without a screw-down crown cannot be certified or pressure tested for water resistance.

– the glass covering the face of the watch is called a crystal.

– the frame around the edge of a crystal is called a bezel.

– A screw watch-back vs. press watch-back, Most watches have a back that needs to be pressed on, the alternative is a screw back which is identified by the notches on the outside edge, which are there to engage the watch-back opening tool. Some backs may alternatively be attached with small screws.
